Mr. Michael “Mike” Patterson has served as the Emergency Disaster Services Director for The Salvation Army, North & South Carolina Division in Charlotte, NC since February 2000. He is the planning, preparedness and response specialist for the two states with a focus on leveraging local capacity and capability to prepare for and respond to disasters.
His background in disaster work began as a volunteer in 1997 in North Carolina, responding with The Salvation Army to Hurricane Bonnie and continuing in 1999 with Tropical Storm Dennis. He was responsible for Salvation Army recovery operations in Edgecombe County, NC following Hurricane Floyd in September 1999.
Disaster response experience since then has included Hurricanes Michael and Florence (2018), Irma (2017) and Matthew (2016), October Severe Floods in South Carolina (2015); Hurricanes Irene (2011), Ike (2008), Katrina (2005), Charley (2004) and Isabel (2003) and following the September 11, 2001 attacks at The Pentagon (13 days) and the World Trade Center in New York (4 deployments for a combined 7 weeks).
Mike is a member of the North Carolina Emergency Management Association (NCEMA), South Carolina Emergency Management Association (SCEMA), and the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM). Mike attained his Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) credential in October 2005 and re-certified in 2010, 2015 and 2020.
